Satellite images released in recent weeks have revealed the stark impact of record-breaking heatwaves and droughts on the UK landscape. Vegetation stress is widespread, with large areas of England and Wales showing significant browning.

According to data from the Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) analysis, which measures plant health, the most affected regions are Conwy, Flintshire, Denbighshire, and Merseyside. However, this respite comes at a cost: falling groundwater levels can have devastating consequences for plant recovery once rainfall returns, while prolonged dry weather increases the risk of flash flooding.

Dr Jess Neumann from the University of Reading notes that British plants are not adapted to prolonged summer droughts and hot weather, unlike their Mediterranean counterparts. The rapid development of this year’s “flash” drought has been facilitated by relatively normal river flows and soil moisture levels in early spring. However, repeated heatwaves have sapped moisture from soils and vegetation via evaporation, increasing demand for water.

The consequences of this drought are far-reaching. Dr Pauline Scheelbeek from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine warns that less reliable access to water may reduce crop yields, leading to a direct knock-on effect on food supplies. This could result in reduced British produce and higher prices in supermarkets. Moreover, low grass stocks have forced farmers to use winter feed for their livestock during the summer, leaving supplies short for later in the year.

Prof Michael Singer from Cardiff University expresses concern about the impact on wildlife, as many animals and plants in the UK are not well adapted to extreme drought conditions. While reservoirs have been less affected than expected due to a particularly wet winter, low levels remain a pressing issue – especially in southern England, where Wimbleball and Blagdon reservoirs are classed as exceptionally low.

The UK’s water management system has come under scrutiny with the widespread restrictions on water use. Questions abound about how effectively resources are being managed, and whether Britain is prepared for drier summers expected with climate change. The Environment Agency’s declaration of drought across large parts of England and Wales raises alarms about the resilience of our water infrastructure.
